Test day is stressful enough without realizing you forgot something important. Here's exactly what you need to bring to your real estate exam — and what to leave at home.

Required Items (Must Have)

1. Valid Government-Issued Photo ID

This is non-negotiable. Without proper ID, you will NOT be allowed to test. Acceptable forms include:

  • Driver's license (not expired)
  • State ID card
  • US Passport or Passport Card
  • Military ID
  • Permanent Resident Card

Important: The name on your ID must EXACTLY match the name on your exam registration. If you recently changed your name, bring supporting documentation.

2. Exam Confirmation/Authorization

Depending on your state and testing provider, you may need:

  • Confirmation email (printed or on phone)
  • Authorization letter from your state
  • Candidate ID number
  • Exam scheduling confirmation

3. Simple Calculator (Check Your State)

Most testing centers provide calculators, but some allow you to bring your own. Rules vary by state and testing provider:

  • PSI: Usually provides calculators, check your state
  • Pearson VUE: Typically provides on-screen calculators
  • If bringing your own: Must be non-programmable, no memory functions

Recommended Items

  • Second form of ID — Just in case there's an issue with your primary ID
  • Light jacket/sweater — Testing rooms are often cold
  • Water bottle — Usually must be clear/unlabeled (check rules)
  • Snack for break — Some exams have scheduled breaks
  • Earplugs — If allowed, can help with focus
  • Directions to testing center — Don't rely on GPS alone

Prohibited Items (Leave These Home)

These items are NOT allowed in the testing room and may be confiscated:

  • Cell phones — Must be turned off and stored in locker
  • Smart watches — Treated same as phones
  • Study materials — No books, notes, or flashcards
  • Bags and purses — Stored in locker
  • Hats and hoods — Some centers prohibit
  • Food and drinks — Except water in approved container
